USA WON GOLD 4X100 Relay Jason Lezak incredible Beijing Olympic 2008
There was no way for Jason Lezak to know how far behind he was, and no reason to try to figure it out. With 350 meters gone and 50 to go in the 4 x 100 freestyle relay, Lezak made his turn, and kept it simple.

“I’m not going to lie,” Lezak said. “When I flipped at the wall I thought, ‘There’s no way.’ Then in the next instant, I was like ‘No, this is the Olympics. I’m not giving up.’ I got a super charge and just took it from there.”

It was Monday morning in the so-called Water Cube, and things had not gone particularly well for the U.S. Katie Hoff, the 19-year-old from the same North Baltimore pool that Michael Phelps came of age in, had lost a big lead in the 400-meter freestyle, and wound up with silver. Brendan Hansen, world record-holder in the 100 breast, lost both his record and a medal, coming in fourth.

There was a time that the 4 x 100 freestyle relay was as much of a lock for the U.S. as a basketball gold. The first seven times it was contested, the Americans won it. So imagine how much of a jolt it was when the U.S. was stunned by Australia in Sydney in 2000, and fell to the bronze in Athens.

“I think I wanted it more than anybody, not just for myself, but to show that we are the nation to be beat in that relay,” he said.

The only trouble was that France was not cooperating. The indefatigable Phelps swam an American-record 47.51 in the first leg, even as Australia’s Eamon Sullivan was swimming a world record (47.24). Garrett Weber-Gale, in the second leg, got the lead back with a superb swim before Cullen Jones, who learned to swim at a YMCA pool in Newark, dove in.

BEIJING 2008: MICHAEL PHELPS: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! THE ASTONISHING UNTHINKABLE EIGHT GOLD MEDALS TOPPING MARK SPITZ’S 1972 PERFORMANCE! ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

MICHAEL Phelps today swept to an astonishing eighth gold medal at the Beijing Games with victory for the US in the 4×100m medley relay.

He gives the U.S. the lead in the 4 x 100 medley relay in the butterfly, then Lezak completes a world-record performance, as Phelps earns his record eighth gold medal, topping Mark Spitz’s 1972 performance.

The American cemented his place as the greatest swimmer — and perhaps sportsman — in history by completing a perfect eight victories from eight swims, seven of them in world records.

The Americans held off a determined Australian team to win in a world record of 3.29.34, beating the previous mark of 3.30.68.

The Australians also broke the old world record in 3. 30.04 secs with Japan taking bronze in 3.30.18.

The Americans took an early lead courtesy of Olympic 100m backstroke champion Aaron Peirsol and turned almost a second in front of the Russians and the Japanese with Australia fourth.

Brendan Hanson bolstered that edge although Australia’s Brenton Rickard swam brilliantly to keep Australia in touch.

Australia’s Andrew Lauterstein had a massive challenge to keep up with Phelps on the butterfly leg but he fought on magnificently to give Eamon Sullivan an outside shot at hauling in America’s Jason Lezak on the freestyle leg.

The 100m silver medallist responded with a lightning quick 46.65 but it was not enough to catch Lezak.

Sullivan said the Australians had thrown everything they had at their arch rivals.

“It’s something we have been working towards for four or five years now,” he said.

“The (men of the Australian team) have really lifted.”

Lauterstein said the silver medal performance was a sign of better things to come for the Aussies.
“We said we were going to give these guys a shake and we certainly did,” he said.

“There are good things to come for us four. We are four young guys, they have Jason Lezak and Aaron Peirsolwho are a bit older.”

The US victory sealed a remarkable 25th world record at Beijing’s Water Cube.

Michael Phelps VIDEO - World Record Olympian - Best Swimming Races & 13 Medals

Michael Fred Phelps (born June 30, 1985) is an American swimmer who holds world records in several events. Phelps has won thirteen (eleven gold, two bronze) Olympic medals overall, eight (six gold, two bronze) at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and five (all gold) at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games,[2], which gave him the most gold medals of any Olympic athlete at 11.[3]

Phelps’s eight medals in the Athens Olympics tied him with Soviet gymnast Alexander Dityatin for the most medals of any type in any one Olympics. [4]

Phelps’ international titles, along with his various world records, have resulted in him being awarded the World Swimmer of the Year Award in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and American Swimmer of the Year Award in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2007.

Phelps has qualified to compete in eight swimming events at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, and is attempting to beat Mark Spitz’s record of seven gold medals at one Olympics.

US swimmer Michael Phelps broke the record for Olympic gold medals won by taking his 10th and 11th in a double victory on Wednesday.

Phelps, 23, won his fourth gold of the Beijing Olympics and 10th of all time with victory in the 200m butterfly.

And he claimed yet another gold as part of the US 4×200m freestyle team.

Phelps has now surpassed the nine golds won by Paavo Nurmi, Carl Lewis, Mark Spitz and Larysa Latynina to cement his place in Olympic history.

He is also bidding to beat Spitz’s record of seven gold medals in a single Olympic games and has moved to within three of that achievement.

The US star came a step closer to gold number six when he eased through to the semi-finals of the 200m individual medley, winning his heat in a time of one minute 58.65secs

He has the 100m butterfly and the 4×100m medley relay later in the week.

“There is still something left in the tank,” he said. “I’ve got three races left, so there had better be something left in the tank.”

Phelps began proceedings in the Water Cube on Wednesday in typical fashion, beating Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh and Japan’s Takeshi Matsuda in a world record time of 1:52.03 to claim 200m butterfly gold.

Michael Phelps 2008 Beijing

Michael Fred Phelps (born June 30, 1985) is an American swimmer and 14-time Olympic gold medalist (the most by any Olympian), who currently holds seven world records in swimming.

He holds the record for the most gold medals won at a single Olympics; a total of eight, surpassing Mark Spitz. Overall, Phelps has won 16 Olympic medals: six gold and two bronze at Athens in 2004, and eight gold at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In winning these medals, he has twice equaled Soviet gymnast Alexander Dityatin’s record of eight medals (of any type) at a single Olympics (Dityatin: Moscow 1980; Phelps: Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008), and ranks second in total career Olympic medals, after Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina, who won a total of 18 medals (nine gold) spanning three Olympic Game

Five physical attributes particularly suit Michael Phelps to swimming: his long, thin torso (low drag in the water), arms which span 6 feet 7 inches (201 cm) (long, powerful, propulsive “paddles”) disproportionate to his height of 6 feet 4 inches (193 cm), relatively short legs (lower drag, and perhaps the speed enhancement of a hydrofoil), coupled to size 14 feet (providing the effect of flippers) by hypermobilile ankles he can extend beyond the pointe of a ballet dancer, enabling him to whip his feet (as if they were fins, for maximum thrust through [if not over] the water).
1:13 AMAccording to an article in The Guardian, Phelps eats around 12,000 kcal each day, or about five times more than the average adult male.

Throughout the Olympics, Phelps was questioned by the press if perhaps his feats were “too good to be true”, a reference to unsupported rumors that Phelps may be taking performance enhancing drugs. In response, Phelps noted that he had signed up for Project Believe, a project by the United States Anti-Doping Agency in which U.S. Olympians can volunteer to be tested in excess of the World Anti-Doping Agency guidelines.

As a young teenager, Michael Phelps trained at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club under coach Bob Bowman. At the age of 15, Michael Phelps competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, becoming the youngest American male swimmer at an Olympic Games in 68 years. While he did not win a medal, he did make the finals and was fifth in the 200 m Butterfly. Michael Phelps proceeded to make a name for himself in swimming shortly thereafter. Five months after the Sydney Olympics, Michael Phelps broke the world record in the 200 m butterfly to become, at 15 years and 9 months, the youngest man ever to set a swimming world record.

Beijing 2008 : One Phelps, one dream, one reality

BEIJING, August 17) — Day nine was by far the busiest day of Beijing 2008 so far — with some 37 medals doled out as competitions concluded and old Olympic For Michael Phelps, it’s not enough to just set a new standard. He has to demolish the old one. Winningest Olympian ever? He’s two golds past that already and not finished yet, just over halfway to his goal of breaking Mark Spitz’s record. (Aug .13) friends left the limelight, while others emerged from the shadows. Today, though, the spotlight shone on just one man
