They couldn’t shoot, and occasionally they didn’t defend. It was definitely a performance the Americans should be relieved came before they got to Beijing.

Undefeated, but no longer unchallenged, the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team wrapped up its exhibition schedule with its toughest test, pulling away to beat Australia 87-76 Tuesday night.

The United States led by only four points nearly halfway through the third quarter and was up by seven midway through the fourth against an Australian team that was resting its best player, Milwaukee Bucks center Andrew Bogut.

The U.S. players still feel like gold-medal favorites, but they hardly looked like gold-medal locks during this shaky outing.

“Nothing alarming for us. It’s alarming when you lose,” Dwyane Wade said.

“We’re still growing. We’re still going to get better as each game goes on, but I think tonight we learned something.”

The Americans relied on an aggressive defensive effort to overcome a horrendous night from 3-point range and the free-throw line, the same areas that proved costly in their semifinal loss to Greece in the world championships two years ago.

Wade scored 22 points and LeBron James had 16 for the Americans, who finished 3-of-18 from 3-point range and 20-of-33 (61 percent) at the foul line.

The U.S. team won two blowouts in Macau but found things much more difficult here, starting with an 89-68 victory over Russia on Sunday.

A trailer that shows that the 2008 USA Basketball team are ready to face any challenge that is put in front of them especially in the Beijing Olympics. They had come a long way to get here and they will certainly not lose.

The 2008 U.S. Olympic team consists of Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Tayshaun Prince, Michael Redd, Dwayne Wade, and Deron Williams.

The 2008 U.S. Olympic coaching staff consists of Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Mike D’Antoni, and Nate McMillan.

Hello Summer Olympic fans from our “Rockstar” studio this is Dana Ward here with a Team USA Basketball Quick Hitter.

Team USA Basketball assembled for a minicamp workout this past weekend at the campus of UNLV in Las Vegas. The goal for this year’s team is the Gold Medal and anything short of it will be a major disappointment. Many of the players and coaches from Team USA gave a 3-year commitment to their national team so one can understand the importance of this trip to Beijing for Olympic competition. The 12-member squad has already been announced and is headed by Kobe Bryant, Lebron James and Dwayne Wade. The team went through 1 day of practice and orientation to prepare for their full training camp that begins on July 21st.

Team USA opens play in Group B against the host country China on August 10th in the preliminary stages of the Men’s Basketball competition. China’s Yao Ming returned to training for the China National Team and reported that the stress fracture on his left foot suffered during the NBA season was 80% healed. Doctor’s have told the Houston Rocket center that his injury usually takes a full year to heal and there’s a good chance it wont be until February of 2009 when he is 100%. But do to the pressures of playing for his host country Yao will give it a go. Team USA’s remaining preliminary group games in Olympic Competition are against defending Gold Medallist Spain, Angola and 2 more teams to be determined in an Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Athens Greece commencing on July 14th.
Oddmakers have set Team USA the overwhelming favorite at minus three fifty to win the Gold Medal at the Beijing Summer Olympics. Spain the defending Olympic champion is the second favorite at 3 ½ to 1.
