USA Vs. Spain: The Road to Gold - USA wins Gold Medal
After eight long years, the United States returned to its customary place atop the basketball world, winning the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics with an emotional and hard-fought 118-107 victory over determined Spain.
After knocking off its first seven foes by an average of more than 30 points, the Americans found themselves in a one-possession game in the fourth quarter against the 2006 World Champions, who had lost to the USA by 37 points in group play but showed plenty of character and heart in this contest. Then the U.S. began displaying some redeeming qualities of its own.
The leader was NBA MVP Kobe Bryant, who simply took over. After Spain closed to 91-89, he made a tough runner, found Deron Williams for a 3-pointer, added another hoop and broke up an alley-oop pass to rebuild the lead to 105-94. When the margin dwindled again to four points, Bryant stuck in the dagger, draining a 3-pointer and drawing a foul for a 108-99 bulge with 3:10 to go.
Dwyane Wade scored 27 points, Bryant added 20 and LeBron James 14 for the U.S., which had not won gold since the 2000 Olympics. The Americans failed to medal at the 2002 World Championships and received bronze at the 2004 Olympics and the 2006 World Championships, prompting an overhaul of USA Basketball.
Rudy Fernandez scored 22 points, Pau Gasol added 21 and Juan Carlos Navarro 18 for Spain, which only lost to the U.S. in this tournament and claimed a silver medal to match its best Olympic showing (1984).

The 2008 U.S. Olympic coaching staff consists of Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Mike D’Antoni, and Nate McMillan.

And one more, i cant agree that Pau is just average NBA player, and this is not because i am LAL fan. It was really good at NBA for years. Hes not so dominated as Shaq used to be, or Howard is now, but he is very useful for the team.
Spain is stil world champions, USA is Olympic Champions. Cause World championships is every for years between Olympics.

world championship was on …2002, 2006 and next one will be in 2010, so if USA whants to be world champions they must win in 2010 (it will be hosted in Turkey).

yes they won, but that Final game could have gone either way. Spain missed an open 3 point with a minute to go that would have given them the LEAD and won the game resulting in the biggest upset in basketball history.
Not bringing pure 3 point shooters just to please the public with dunks and superstars was the biggest mistake of the US coach. If had the chance to watch the original Dream team you would understand.. Chris Mullin was arguebly the best and most deathly player in that squad.

In my opinion, the only mistake this Redeem Team made was to bring only a single pure 3 point shooter to the squad, in difference with Dream team who had Bird, Mullin, Magic, Stockton.. not to mention Pippen and Jordan (who shoot better than kobe or Lebron from the arc. This is why team got so close on the Redeem team, they play zone and force them to take the 3 point.. which show everybody their weakness.
The person to blame is the person or coach to have recruited this team,not the players

wow i was watching this game live at 3 in the morning and spain just wouldnt give up they struggled and played amazing they had to play perfect coming into that game wich they did but usa was just to much to handle to tell you the truth the one who changed the game and made the difrence were dwyane wade,chris bosh,chris paul deron williams and tayshuan.i know kobe came and had a big 4th quarter but before d wade came in he was playing like trash

the usa played like balls dude. somthing crazy like 30 three point attempts… thats EXACTLY what spain wanted to do.
any other team on this planet shoots 30 three pointers in a game and plays a team that played as fundamentally sound as spain loses that game. simply put spain played the best team ever assembled and almost pulled it out.
