Like lightning out of nowhere, Usain Bolt is now the world’s fastest man.

The Jamaican sprinter, who doesn’t even consider the 100 meters his best race, set the world record Saturday night with a time of 9.72 seconds at the Reebok Grand Prix, .02 seconds faster than the old mark held by his countryman, Asafa Powell.
Bolt was using the 100 as “speed work” to get better for his favorite race, the 200, and also to avoid having to run the more grueling 400. Then, unexpectedly, he ran the world’s second-fastest time a few weeks ago at 9.76. He has done Jamaica proud.

Running the 100-meter dash in a stunning 9.69 seconds for a blowout win that could have been even worse.

It was no contest as the 21-year-old Jamaican took a huge lead halfway through the race, then held his arms out wide, turned his palms up, pounded his chest and started celebrating a good 10 strides before he reached the finish line.

He broke his own record, set in May in New York, by .03 second and became the first sprinter to set the world record in an Olympic final since Donovan Bailey ran 9.84 at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Bolt beat Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago by 0.2 second - more than a body length - while American Walter Dix was third.

Shelly-Ann Fraser managed to win Gold in 10.78 in the 100m Women’s final for Jamaica making this the first since 1988 that any country has won gold in both 100m Men and Women’s Final.
